Clareon PanOptix Pro is Alcon’s newest trifocal intraocular lens. It replaces the cloudy lens removed during cataract surgery and is designed to focus light at three distances: up close for reading, at arm’s length for computers and dashboards, and far away for driving and TV.
Who it suits
PanOptix Pro is a good fit for people who want to depend on glasses as little as possible after cataract surgery and who have otherwise healthy eyes. A version that also corrects astigmatism is available for patients who need it.
It may not be the right choice if you have significant macular, retinal or optic nerve disease, or if you do a lot of night driving and are very sensitive to glare. Your surgeon will go over your measurements and lifestyle with you before recommending a lens.
What to expect
Most patients see well at distance and intermediate range soon after surgery, and near vision keeps improving over the first few weeks as the brain adapts to the new lens. Some people notice rings or halos around lights at night. For most, these fade over time.
No lens can promise a life without glasses. Most PanOptix patients do most daily tasks without them, but you may still want readers for very fine print or dim light.
PanOptix Pro or Vivity?
Both reduce your need for glasses. PanOptix Pro gives the strongest near vision. Vivity gives excellent distance and intermediate vision with fewer night-time halos, but you are more likely to need readers for close work. Our lens comparison lays out the options side by side.
Cost
Medicare and most insurance plans cover standard cataract surgery. Premium lenses such as PanOptix Pro carry an additional out-of-pocket cost for the advanced lens technology. Our staff will review your coverage and costs before surgery.
